Estradiol (E2) - is responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics. Together with progestogens, they control all the most important reproductive processes in women. Estrogens are mainly produced in the ovaries (follicles, corpus luteum), but small amounts are also produced in the testes and adrenal cortex. During pregnancy, estrogen is mainly produced in the placenta. Determination of estradiol is used in clinical practice to explain fertility disorders in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, gynecomastia, estrogen-producing ovarian and testicular tumors, and hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex.
