Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) A degradation product of the viral core antigen (HBcorAg) - HBeAg usually appears during the acute period of infection, shortly after the appearance of HBsAg. It persists (not always) in active chronic infection. It is a marker of active hepatitis B virus replication and particularly high infectivity (marker of infectivity). Often associated with liver damage and a high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma.
