IgA Immunoglobulin A

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is an antibody whose main functions are the binding of microorganisms in mucous membranes, the activation of the complement alternative pathway and the activation of inflammatory reactions, it is extremely important in the processes of protection against infection of the respiratory, urogenital and digestive tracts. IgA cannot cross the placenta, so it is not present in fetal blood. The concentration of IgA decreases: with mucosal infections, atopy and autoimmune diseases. The concentration of IgA increases: in case of chronic liver disease, chronic infectious diseases, especially of the digestive and respiratory tract, or rheumatoid arthritis.
